People like Bill Mollison or Richard Stallman lead with their conscience, and call them as they see them. This necessarily means anyone on the other side of their opinion is going to see them as spiky. But you always know where you stand with them. You know what they're saying is what they think, and they're open to changing their minds.
They can be frustrating to deal with, but you can trust them.

People like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs or the Clintons OTOH, lead with their self-interest, and say only what they think people want to hear. So you never really know what they think about anything. Their apparent opinions are subject to sudden, lurching changes, depending on what suits their opaque strategies.
They can be very charming, especially when you have something they want. But trusting them is like letting a scorpion ride on your back across a river.
