Hey, remember JPEG2000, back when that name sounded all future-ey? It sure died in the arse, eh? It had a ton of alleged advantages, and one undocumented disadvantage: unlike the careful degradation of JPEG and the subtle palette trickery of PNG, J2K was able to faithfully reproduce the Berryman Technique cognitohazard imageset---informally known as Basilisks, or even less formally "Death Parrots" (those who know why don't tell).
When the deaths started, browsers began quietly dropping support for the format. The BLIT mechanism would (by design, intent and a few selective assassinations) be completely forgotten by now, except for the rapidly spreading rumour (spoiler: fact) that GPT6 is BLIT-sensitive. Please look into the red light.
