Google open sourced the operating system of the #Pebble smartwatch, 10 years after Pebble went bankrupt, it got sold to Fitbit, which then got acquired by Google.

The founder of Pebble is now bringing out new watches. So there will be a capable smartwatch with a world-class open source operating system.

It is extremely low end, which means 30 days of battery life instead of the measly 1-2 days of some other smartwatches.

What sets Pebble apart as well is its excellent UI/UX and also DX.

What is also exciting (to me) is that it has a microphone (and the new models a speaker). Since voice to text is so good now, you can use it as a (super) thin client for interacting with LLMs.

Playing around a bit with the C API. https://gist.github.com/louwers/a03ec543fbb1f2ccd01a68b3537f60d5#file-training_window-c

The development environment is super easy to set up with this tool. https://github.com/coredevices/pebble-tool

Aside from having to migrate stuff to Python 3 most of the build tooling is in a really functional state.

Pebble had a quite unique engineering culture for an embedded startup. Here is an interesting podcast on the subject. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dk5wsNN8abo
