In the comparatively dry parts of Valais, Switzerland, these 'bisses' were constructed up to 500 years ago - and as recently as 1974 - to transport water from mountain streams to villages and fields. Some bisses stretch for dozens of kilometres. They make for very pleasant and gentle walks, especially close to Verbier (which means "near bisse").

@Mountains The people who kept these water canals going, were called "Sander". What I understand is these people would (amongst other things) keep the canals free from sand (hence: Sander, name rings a feint bell to me 😜).

There was an open air theater a couple of years ago, but unfortunately couldn't go.
