#PPOD: A collision between two galaxies has resulted in a merged star system with an unusual appearance and bizarre internal motions. Messier 64 (M64) features a spectacular dark band of absorbing dust in front of the galaxy's bright nucleus, giving rise to its nicknames, the "Black Eye" or "Evil Eye" galaxy. Color image of a spiral galaxy seen at a 45-degree angle from lower left to upper right. Dark bands of dust swirl around the bright center, and numerous young blue stars and old red stars can be seen scattered throughout the outer bands. A faint halo of light surrounds the entire galaxy.
