Skara Brae, Neolithic village on the Bay of Skaill, Orkney.

The ruins were only revealed by a severe storm in 1850. So much of our past enduring just below the surface of things, beneath fields, supermarkets, roads, the shale layers of each successive wave of humans.

A low roofless rounded stone construction sits right next to a sandy bay, surrounded and topped with green grass and daisies. The walls are lichen-spattered, the interior largely sandy.
