TIL about the existence of #OmniOS

This brings me to a little #Rant

Please, by the name of whatever, write your website (at least the about section) with someone in mind who encounters your "subject" die the first time!

Let's get back to OmniOS example:

The hive page opens with
"The Open Source Enterprise Server OS with just the features you need"

Knowing nothing before, i don't know significantly more now

• the OS (operating system) part was clear,
• "Enterprise Server" are buzzwords unhelpful for further search
• just the features I need?!? For now i just "need" to figure out what it is!!!

This just leaves the information that it is Open Source, nice

Ok, let's check the "About" page.

There i learn that OmniOS was initially developed by OmniTI, the exact date when the announced the end, the existence of the OmniOS Community Edition Association (OmniOSce)

But still no real idea what it is

Funny enough a link leading to a The Register article (i accidentally clicked) shows how it can be done better

"OmniOS – an Oracle-free open-source variant of Solaris"

Now I know what it is, or or if i wouldn't, I could at least could search for Solaris to learn more.

While this rant was inspired by and used OmniOS as a (negative) example it's not limited to OmniOS and doesn't say anything about it's qualities.
