Château d'Azay le Rideau, a flawless little (ish) 16th-century French Renaissance gem near the Loire. #France #architecture

A chateau constructed from pale yellowish stone, with a steep dark-gray roof and pointed-top turrets, reflects in lake. Tall green trees flank the building on either side.

@stshank one thing that always boggles my mind was building these buildings in water like this. Was it just a flooded basement?

@elebertus I think in this case it's a combination of a pretty thick stone foundation and a pretty shallow Lake that was actually man-made only a century and a bit ago. But overall, yeah, lots of water in the Loire valley!

@stshank I suppose it just depends on the construction and behavior of the materials, of course not all stone is porous or will allow water to eventually leach through.

Still the image of it in my brain just says “this is a bad idea!” Haha
