I'm still on some commercial platforms, but I've given up on X, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Sometimes I wish I could have made different choices when I started my online journey in the 90s, and not have my full name and details out there to some extent. I'm in too deep. There's some safety in knowing certain things - security-wise, to protect myself. But it's horrifying to think about people who don't take those precautions. Many are just prey for the black and gray hats.

I often choose not to post about these things on commercial social media because it's seen as fearmongering and insensitive. I wish I could warn everyone, but most do not care until something bad happens.

@rolle I used to share my details extremely openly between the 1990s and the 2010s. Back it was easy to find information about me just by searching.

It is often said that when you put something online, it stays there forever. There is some truth to that, but based on my experience, it is actually quite easy to make yourself anonymous again. Sure, some information is almost impossible to remove, but for the most part, it is doable.

I just wanted to say this to people who want to make themselves more anonymous and think it is too late. It is never too late. It requires some work, but it is possible.

@saaste That's the thing, I'm not sure if I want to or if it's even worth the effort. I have a five-figure amount of credentials, and for me, it's nearly impossible to manage all of that. Plus, I'm a business owner, so there's definitely some benefits to putting my face and name out there.

While I criticized it just now, I also see the safety in being visible.
