In #Spanish when it comes to verbs, how does one know whether to use “a” in front of an infinitive when “to” can also be built in?

I’m not sure how to phrase this in an Internet search - if those worked anymore anyway.

Por ejemplo,

Quiero aprender a montar a caballo.

I imagine we just need to know our verbs like aprender, that some are followed by words like “a” or “de”, and let’s make mistakes in the meantime, but figure it’s worth asking my network here if there’s a pattern.

P.S. montar is not followed by “a” usually. When it comes to el metro, una bici(cleta), etc, montar is followed by “en”
