⚠️ Mastodon and Misskey will never ask you to verify your ID.

This is a scam attempting to collect personal information and, in some cases, hijack accounts by tricking you into clicking malicious links.

⚠️ However, Mastodon and Misskey do offer an option in your account settings to enable two-step verification for logins.

For your own security and to help prevent brute-force attacks, it’s strongly recommended that you enable this feature on your account.

@smallcircles @Linux Right, it seems to me that any Mastodon instance that serves users in the UK will have to either verify ages or outright ban IPs from that region, if they don't want to be hit with a multi-million-pound fine.

I've been frustrated to see some reactions to this Bluesky news that claim that it's happening because (a) Bluesky is a US company and/or (b) Bluesky is centralized or VC-funded.

@jsit @smallcircles

That’s not how jurisdiction works.

You're responsible for following the laws of your own country. Your government can't enforce its laws worldwide, and neither can anyone else.

For example, if Russia suddenly demands that anyone signing up for a website must pay $5 and submit a DNA sample, but your site is hosted in France, you can ignore that demand. Russia doesn’t get to dictate what you do. You're not Russian, and it's not your job to enforce their laws.
