I found an old picture that illustrates how much bigger and interesting an area becomes once you plant other things instead of lawn. Besides the vertical layers, you also get nooks with different environments, and so much color!
We started de-lawning this area on the spring of 2015. Now I have lavender, blueberries, lingonberries, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, sage, lovage, curry-herb, parsley and others (and lots of pollinators).
This is one of my happy places.

Lush garden with plants of different heights, some up to 4 feet tall, and different shades of green. In the front left corner, a lavender in full bloom. Next to it, there is a medium-sized blueberry bush. An old raised bed is visible a weathered raised-bed within which many herb plants are growing. some of the herbs are flowering.

Patch of lawn of aprox 6 xx 10 feet long. On top of the lawn there is some lumber placed in a square-like shape to try out a raised-bed design. Past the strip of lawn there is a mulched area with a tire-swing. Areas of the picture that had people in them have been obscured.
