Westerners universally use the term "machete" to refer to the cutting/hacking blade with the rounded edge. That's... the Spanish name.
Wikipedia acknowledges that its called a "cutlass" in the afro Caribbean. And I thank them, because... cutlass is just as valid a term.
(But also... yes it is a sibling to the short sword (Cutlass) that pirates used. Because pirates did dock at these islands. 馃槄馃檭)
