“I think the new web aesthetic is about getting active again. Platforms encourage passivity. They want us to stay still and scrolling, looking at what the algo wants to show us. Like, swipe, repeat. But the new web aesthetic is non-linear. It encourages you to move from one site to another, to dive down rabbit holes, and crucially, to continue sharing what you find.”

@ricmac @sachajudd Many years ago, a faulty member railed against student use of chat apps & online forums. I argued that students were using these new technologies to meet up IRL or connect w/ people who had similar interests when there wasn't a local community. One of the apps they wanted me to block on the university's wifi was AIM. I don't think I could make the case that these apps are about connecting people to people. Today's commercial social media is designed to be addictive & isolating
@ricmac @sachajudd Dammit, now I want to do a little boxes parody.

Little boxes on the timeline
Little boxes made of clicky baity
Little boxes for attention
And they all look just the same

There's a heart and
There's a fork sign
There's three dots
A comment bubble
And they're all made out of clicky baity
And they all look just the same
