Ugh, everytime new #SmartGlasses are presented masses of people are crooning how absolutely cool that is. Think about it a bit more, folks, I'd say.

The moment smart glasses become well accepted and pervasive in society, is the moment we know that shite really hit the fan, and we are deep in dystopia.

It is not unthinkable we get a high adoption rate, if those #AR info overlays provide real use to people.

Compare to driving from A to B which hardly anyone can do anymore withouth #Google Maps.

@zak yes, the situation wrt spy cams is already terrible. I have seen vids of people being tasked "search the camera's in this hotel room" and overlooking 20 or so.

Even without recording video (which is hypothetical, as you don't know what software people are running), the detailed metadata that becomes possible can be highly undesirable.

Anyway, we are in worse situation with big tech and their AI, so there's that. Preparing for a Luddite life in a remote log cabin, I guess :D

That is really sad indeed. And I agree, though I remember the fumbling-in-car with unfolded map and split in the road coming up ahead, could be stressful at times. But that had its charms too.

Now it is also a kind of resilience thing. Some serious conflict, underseas internet cables get cut.. aaand, its navigating based on the sun and stars again :)

I've been using Here WeGo (Proprietary) (formerly Here Maps) because they offer 100% usable offline, downloadable maps and navigation that has never failed me in about 12 years.

Since my sensibilities regarding software freedom have evolved since, I've now downloaded Organic Maps (Available on F-Droid) that offers the same, but I haven't put it through its paces yet.

Yes, I posted about Organic Maps one or 2 years ago, and it was a very popular toot.

Yet as things go in software freedom world, not everything has gone well since, and there was first an open letter and then a fork of the project..
