Before the first Labour government came in and started to create a universal social welfare system in Aotearoa, the two major parties of the time - United and Reform - formed a grand coalition to hold them off. It lasted 4 years, from 1931-35. The National party emerged from the wreckage

National today has many parallels with Unity then, and ACT and Winston First have just as many with Reform. Could history repeat next year?

Under FPP maybe, but I don't think a merger like that would make any sense under MMP. At least not unless one of the parties is in danger of dropping below the 5% threshold, and even then the preferred strategy has been to stitch up an electorate to keep them in.
