This Is My Glasgow
@thisismyglasgow@mastodon.scot  ·  activity timestamp 5 months ago

The South Portland Street Suspension Bridge connecting Laurieston to the centre of Glasgow. Designed by Alexander Kirkland and George Martin, it was built in 1851 to replace an earlier wooden footbridge. When it first opened it cost a halfpenny to cross it. In the distance is the Glasgow Bridge (now known more commonly as the Jamaica Street Bridge), which was built in the 1890s to replace earlier bridges constructed in 1833 and 1772.
