…still wondering about the commercial viability of #Bluesky
plot of number of unique daily posters per day (red bars) between August 2023 and today. Horizontal grey lines for orientation are drawn at 1,500,000 million; 1,200,000 m.; 900,000; 600,000; and 300,000. The data show a 20% drop in unique daily posters since February. @UlrikeHahn

Commercial viability is not relevant here, but is this 'pattern' similar to the #fediverse.

@RoedigerRG yes, I think “scalloped growth” is a common pattern for things like social media sites

@UlrikeHahn They might want to apply "AI" to emulate the effect of user engagement. That would, at the same time, improve the business appeal, and glue users to their screens.

would also love to know where that activity is fading to: other social media or just drifting away from online social media altogether?

@UlrikeHahn Well, the universal laws that govern aspects of acuteness, appeal or attention. There are techniques for measuring and modelling these, e.g., Von Grünau, M. W., et al. "Flicker and the efficiency of cues for capturing attention." Vision research 39.19 (1999): 3241-3252.

@tg9541 those are all about stationary cues/signals, no? So I can’t see how they would apply here even in principle: engagement with a social media site via posting changes the very thing we are engaging with….
