How fraking fantastic is this!
How fraking fantastic is this!
It's the most exciting and frustrating and promising thing I've been part of since I first discovered email and the web.
The feeling of empowerment I felt when I setup my #GoToSocial instance is indescribable - I would look at myself in the mirror and think: “I’m the owner and admin of my network!”
After witnessing and being affected by the enshittification of so many platforms, I can say it’s the best feeling (in the tech space).
Yay for #DigitalSovereignty 👑

That's great to hear. Your profile doesn't read like the typical uber-geek self-hoster. Is this the first digital service you set up for yourself? Any tips for beginners?
I'm surprised noone stepped in to point out that self-hosting isn't the answer for everyone, so here's the obligatory link about that;

But I encourage anyone who can self-host to do so.
There's also the middle ground I call community-hosting, which is where those with the skills host for their family/ friends/ community group/ workplace etc. Or where it's offered as an easily replaced commodity service, which is what we are working on with Bridge Seat Co-op.

It reminds me of the similar binary around food production. There's the corporate supply chain, and there's growing all your own food yourself. As with tech, all the interesting and *fun* stuff happens in the social spaces between those extremes.
