About "closed" social networks, when people prefer to stay in their small world, I heard at #SplinterCon the terms : "dark forest", "cozy Web" or "postviral era".
Proof of life from #SplinterCon!
Yet another fascinating talk from the #GEODE team. Louis Pétiniaud talking about data routes and BGP manipulations as geopolitical tools. The map shows all the places that GEODE team has been to doing their fieldwork.
Final keynote from the opening of #SplinterCon by Lai Yi Ohslen. She advocates for a multi-layered approach to measure Internet fragmentation, including user experience of splinternet (!) The internet has always been splintered – she says.
Francesca Musiani @franmusiani talking about federation and the Fediverse as a way to fix ongoing fragmentation of Internet
We have just kicked off SplinterCon in Paris! Three days of workshops, round-tables, tool showcases ahead
"Collateral freedom" is #RSF service to mirror censored Web sites under different URL, to work around censorship.
In russian:
https://monitor-ru.net/ : monitoring the Internet in Russia (and the outages / shutdowns )
https://vpn-ru.net/ : choosing a VPN in Russia
Comme à toute conférence où il y a des hackers et où on parle de cybersécurité, il y a des SSID marrants sur le Wifi (comme "Great Firewall", alors que @shaft n'est pas là).
Meduza is the main independant russian news site (obviously heavily censored in Russia) : https://meduza.io/

Good morning, Paris! Third day of #SplinterCon, the conference about Internet fragmentation, censorship, and other sad things.
(Toot is late because my instance was down. In the fediverse, there is always at least one broken instance)

Interesting discussion about the differences between #Matrix and #ActivityPub at #SplinterCon .
Matrix, unlike ActivityPub, separates the group/room (a social concept) from the server/instance (a technical concept) so you don't choose a server for content or content control reasons, just for technical reasons.
I discover there are several ways to enter the #Tor network, without using one of the publicly listed (and therefore easily censorable) relays, besides domain fronting.
Project: a software library to implement all these ways, to make life simpler for developers.

We will travel to exotic lands and see how they do DNS and BGP and censorship there.
If you manage a free software project, and are hosted at Github, you decide to exclude people from Cuba (Github blocks them).
