In my free time, I've been *very* slowly building @recollect, a minimalist notes app I've always wanted. The developer whose been helping me make it just finished real-time collaboration. Now I can share and edit notes with family and friends. The app, which is a PWA and works on any device, is free to use if you want to try it out at https://recollect.fyi

"for the Mac" 🤣 ... fuck the Mac. iPhone forever, baby. The iPhone and iOS are easily, easily greater than every single product Apple released up to that point https://blog.codinghorror.com/serving-at-the-pleasure-of-the-king/
@codinghorror The frustrating thing is that iOS is 80% there for #PWA becoming a valid alternative to classic apps. But the missing 20% make them impossible.
Spent about 2 days last week giving creating desktop apps for @silverbulletmd another try. One using @TauriApps but the amount of work I'd have to do in Rust is more than I need right now (really trying to keep the number of technologies down), and another with #Electron but distributing an entire Chrome based OS with an app like this is just... ugly. Let alone all the app signing shenanigans. Yuck. For now just parked this all on a branch again, maybe I'll get back to it again at some point.
This is why I dropped the desktop and mobile apps originally a few years ago and well all in on #PWA. It easy to forget how nice web developers have it not having to deal with all the desktop stuff.
p.s. If you're wondering why you don't hear more about web apps, it's because Apple and Google hate them. Web apps totally bypass Apple and Google app stores.
Apple and Google enjoy controlling and taxing apps, but they have no control over web apps and don't get any money from them.
Apple even tried to stop web apps completely, luckily they had to back off: https://open-web-advocacy.org/blog/apple-backs-off-killing-web-apps
Web apps are a way of getting apps directly from the people who make them, without big tech getting in the way.
@FediTips I keep hoping the developer verification #Google tries to force on #android can still be averted. But in any case, what I would love to see as a result of this BS move is, to give the idea of #PWA (progressive web apps) a big boost. But maybe the next step is, that #Google sides with #Apple in another attempt to kill #PWA ...
I’ve teased it a couple of times, I’ve been working on it for pretty much the entire year…and now there’s finally a public version. 🥳
Introducing Quadrants, a local-first playground for all your quick web development ideas.

We detailed this last year and we checked again today. Meta collects everything it needs to track users across apps, a practice strictly prohibited by Apple.
Stop using the native app. Use the web app.
