#Trump admin makes *misleading* case in high-stakes #asylum hearing
#HomelandSecurity asked a judge to #deport a man to #Afghanistan, where he expects the #Taliban to kill him. What happens next could affect thousands.
To make its case, the #DHS did not accuse him of any crime or disloyalty or act of terrorism. Instead, attorneys argued that Afghanistan — a country #US forces rescued him from in 2021 — is safe for his return.
Both institutions, however, have fundamentally transformed since H left them, WaPo has found. The nonprofit’s #US headquarters closed years before the country collapsed, & its former office in #Afghanistan is now under strict #Taliban supervision. The university, meanwhile, no longer provides in-person classes, & its campus was seized by the regime, which installed its own school.

The stakes of the case, which will soon resume in a Virginia courtroom, extend to tens of thousands of #asylum seekers from #Afghanistan whom Trump’s admin may seek to purge. If AG #PamBondi or an #immigration appellate board dominated by #Trump appointees ultimately sides with #DHS, legal experts say the case could set a precedent with sweeping consequences for #Afghans the #US rescued & promised to support.

The man, whom WaPo is identifying as “H” because of concern for his safety, has sought #asylum because he so publicly supported the #UnitedStates’ cause in #Afghanistan. Before fleeing, he worked for a US-based nonprofit & attended an American university in Kabul.
To undermine his claim, government attorneys argued that the #Taliban have allowed those institutions to continue to operate—clear signs, they claimed, that his past would not endanger him if he was deported.

"The National Audit Office concluded in March 2024 that large sites such as military bases would cost more than hotels to accommodate asylum seekers."
Right. So this is nothing to do with saving money. It's purely about performative cruelty to foreigners to keep the racists happy.

£15 billion is a lot of money.
Just imagine how much more headroom Rachel Reeves would have in her budget next month if the government allowed asylum seekers to work so they could pay for their own accommodation.
Especially since then they'd be paying taxes as well. And spending more money on goods and services so the businesses they spend their money with would also pay more taxes.

"Migrant crisis: How Europe went from Merkel's 'We can do it' 10 years ago to pulling up the drawbridge"
You might think that the article would mention Russian influence: Troll farms, funding for Farage, Le Pen, etc. and all the other stuff they do to try to destabilise Europe.
But no, not a single mention of any of that, because it's the BBC. It's all about how terribly concerned everyone is about all these foreigners.

“Scapegoating vulnerable people has always been a deliberate ploy by the government to distract from its own domestic failures.
Today, it might be #asylum seekers.
Tomorrow, it could be #disabled people.
The next day, #trans people.
Whatever the minority, we are witnessing the demonisation of vulnerable people, to the grave detriment of us all.”
#Starmer’s #Labour government has laid itself wide open to these criticisms by #Corbyn.
Because it has turned against each of these groups.
In reaching her decision, Judge Cobb took particular note of the aggressive evolution of the #Trump administration’s #immigration policy in recent months.
She wrote that in a race to meet quotas — as high as 3,000 immigration arrests per day — the administration had resorted to staking out #courthouses, targeting people pursuing #asylum claims & other pathways to remain in the country legally.
