There has been a lot in the news about Starmer trying to curb the effect of the ECHR on asylum claims. But despite searching (and reading many sources), I can't find anything on the number of asylum claims this would impact.
Does anyone have any data on this? I can't help thinking it might be a sledgehammer to crack a nut. And it might limit all our rights!

Federal #law requires the government to process #asylum seekers who arrive at ports of entry. But in 2018, #Trump’s first admin began a policy known as “metering,” in which border agents simply turned back potential asylum seekers to Mexico before they entered the US.
An immigrant rights group, Al Otro Lado, & several asylum seekers filed a lawsuit in California challenging the policy. An appeals court based in SF sided with the migrants. The Trump admin appealed to #SCOTUS in July.

Look, this isn't rocket science: if the government makes it impossible for asylum seekers to work legally, how did they think they were going to work?
As the US discovered during Prohibition, if you make something illegal, it doesn't stop happening, it just gets runs by organised crime.
Legalising work would help asylum seekers, help the economy, increase tax revenue, and cut off a valuable income stream for organised crime gangs.
