Just days after I sent the newsletter, a federal three-judge panel reversed the previous ruling that required Florida to cease operations at the Everglades Concentration Camp. Now, because of the government shutdown, the appeals process has come to a standstill (more detailed legal timeline here). In the midst of all this, while Florida argued that federal laws should not apply to the Camp because it was run by the state, FDEM applied for and received a $608 million grant administered by FEMA to cover the cost of the Concentration Camps. Yes, “camps” plural because FDEM has barreled on ahead with “Deportation Depot”.

I was pleased to hear from so many emergency managers (and others) about how they, too, are horrified by what is happening in Florida. My inclination that many people in our field simply did not know about FDEM being used in this way seemed to be correct. I will admit to being disappointed in how few people felt they were able to say so publicly. If you cannot speak out against concentration camps, I have to wonder what you can speak out about. We are in real trouble here.
