Watching Fellowship of the Ring in honor of Tolkien’s bday and weeping because — while it’s easy to nit-pick about deviations from his text — it’s also so seductively easy to overlook what the films got SO RIGHT. The total is just so, very, very good. #Tolkien #LOTR

I always thought that #JRRTolkien's #Smaug was a metaphor for the #IndustrialAge and #WealthHoarding. It seems I'm not alone! #Tolkien was actually an #environmentalist and possibly a #socialist (though he describes himself as an #anarchist). Excerpt: "Today, we talk about dragons. I refer specifically to the greedy, northern (often fire-breathing) variety as described in Beowulf and featured in Tolkien’s #Hobbit, and I will consider how these monsters present #EnvironmentalCatastrophe as a direct result of #hoarding and #greed.

"My discussion of dragons and climate change continues my recent series of blogs interested in placing medieval literature (and in this case also modern medievalism) in conversation with current crises. This blog develops an earlier argument made in a paper at a 'Tolkien in Vermont' conference (2014), titled 'Dragonomics: Smaug and #Pollution on Middle-Earth,' in which I argue that pollution in Tolkien’s Hobbit is linked to both the literal destruction by the dragon, and the rampant greed that motivates Smaug and ultimately initiates the plunder and violence at the Battle of Five Armies."

I got the last book I needed of #Tolkien's that was published in his lifetime! The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and now finally The Adventures of Tom Bombadil!

If you've not read it, it's a collection of #poetry in the #LotR universe. I do like to rile up other Tolkien fans that the #Silmarillion is a compilation of notes of questionable canonicity while this was very much intended to be published as-is (all in good humour, I love the Silmarillion as much as the next nerd).

I am ADHD, and have Dysthymia to boot. I live an unmedicated life, and am kind of a mess as a result. I'm not anti-medication, it's just that I can't seem to stay on the wagon. If you follow me, and I don't immediately follow you back, don't take it personal. I'm trying to deal with over stimulation.

Politically...jeebus. To make it easy, I'm a Democratic Socialist. Honestly, I hate trying to define myself.

I'm religious, and by that, I shall refer to a quote attributed to Gandhi: "I consider him religious who recognizes the suffering of others." I am a bit all over the place, and do not blindly follow any specific dogma. I have my thing. It's not everybody's thing, but that's okay. Everybody else has their thing. It may not necessarily be my thing, but that's okay. Whatever your thing is, may it bring you comfort and peace of mind. Just don't be a wanker.

I am very pro Fediverse, and pro FOSS. Technology can be very cool and wondrous, if we choose to make it that way. I'm a Linux user, and have shed all but two mainstream social media platforms. I am attempting to de-google my life. I am VERY anti-AI.
