Run the Jewels is the vehicle of Atlanta rapper Killer Mike and New York rapper, producer and once indie hiphop record label owner El-P, self-declared independent as fuck. This is a modern Christmas classic, a monster of a track which perfectly illustrates how hiphop has thankfully been able to recover from the Diddy era.

The perfect antidote to yesterday’s commercial crap is 2000s indie hiphop. Given away for free on the internet, this is from indie singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens’ Christmas remix album Chopped and Scrooged, and pairs Stevens with LA experimental rapper Busdriver. It’s a wild ride, as many of Busdriver’s tracks are, and well worth a listen. Merry something!

A mega pop hit, replayed straight through as if it’s a backing track, this is the kind of shit production that Puff Daddy established as the new shape of hiphop in 1997 (with, e.g., I’ll Be Missing You). This German Diddy clone shows how quickly the style went global. God this shit is cringeworthy. That’s it for the year-by-year chronological breakdown because who wants more of this.

When this came out, Tupac and Biggie had recently, within the space of half a year, each been shot, two murders fuelled by an East Coast / West Coast feud driven by confected animosity between LA’s Death Row Records and NYC’s Bad Boy Entertainment. Remarkably, in this context, this charity recording pairs Death Row’s leading rapper Snoop Dogg with Bad Boy’s owner Puff Daddy. The fewer words said about the latter the better, but Snoop’s rhymes on this are hilarious - calling Santa Claus “the enemy” because he’s wearing red (Snoop’s gang affiliation is with the blue-wearing Crips).

Thanks to Dr Dre, by the mid-1990s, the West Coast G-Funk sound, based largely around replayed funk and soul grooves, had taken over hiphop, and hiphop had taken over pop. From the collector Christmas on Death Row, this track was produced by Dr Dre’s protégé Snoop Dogg himself.
