“This #ICE situation is a nightmare for the Senate.🚨Cannot see a scenario in which Senate Dems can vote for this 6-bill pkg which incls #DHS funding. Govt shuts down Fri. First Senate procedural vote likely not until Wed, giving them limited room to maneuver. House on recess. Any changes to the bill would require the HSE. #Shutdown a real poss at this pt.”

GOP Senators must be rebuked for their allegiance to Trump & his ICE killing machine. Shut it down!

Demonstrators have continued to take to the streets of #Iran,
defying an escalating crackdown by authorities against the growing #protest movement.
An #internet #shutdown imposed by the authorities on Thursday has largely cut the protesters off from the rest of the world,
but videos that trickled out of the country showed thousands of people demonstrating in Tehran overnight into Saturday morning.
They chanted:
💥“Death to Khamenei,”
in reference to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and:
💥“Long live the shah.”
New protests broke out late on Saturday
with people rallying in a northern district of Tehran, according to a video verified by AFP.
Authorities warned people to not take part in protests on Saturday.
The country’s attorney general,
Mohammad Mahvadi Azad,
said anyone who did so would be considered an
“enemy of god”,
a charge which carries the death penalty.
State TV later clarified that anyone who even assisted protesters could face the charge.
Despite the crackdown,
more protests were planned for the weekend.
Reza Pahlavi,
the exiled son of the former shah of Iran,
called for protesters to take to the streets on Saturday and Sunday
and seize control of their towns.
Pahlavi, who has emerged as an increasingly popular figure in the current round of protests,
asked people to hoist the pre-1979
“lion and sun” flag
that was used during his father’s rule.
“Our goal is no longer merely to come into the streets.
The goal is to prepare to seize city centres and hold them,”
he said,
promising he would return to Iran soon.

Periodic reminder:
If you use less gas for transportation, you help drop the value of a barrel of oil, which makes the people looking to profit off of stealing from Venezuelans, lose money.
🇻🇪♥️
Take the bus/train/bike/scooter, buy an EV, don't use gas.
@mekkaokereke The stupid is strong in this #Trump. Gas prices are already falling thanks to an economic collapse we don't fully acknowledge yet. Now we are signed on to feeding Venezuelans while #maga voters go hungry later in January as a new #Shutdown happens. That is going to play really about as well as importing #Argentine beef, but to control #Venezuela all you really need to do is offload food from ships:-) And that is on Chavez/Maduro dumb. May you live in stupid times, said nobody ever!
Found this in my cartoon archive, made during the previous shutdown of the US government in 2019.
#Trump admin to fire worker for TV interview about #SNAP

…The threat of Mei’s dismissal has sparked concerns & outrage among other USDA workers & members of the Federal Unionists Network, who argue that the move is part of a concerted effort by the #Trump admin to chill #speech among federal employees.
At the time Mei spoke to MSNBC, the information she shared was publicly available through a variety of news articles & guidance from anti-hunger advocates, think tanks & organizations.
#USDA itself, in a memo dated Sept30, explained that #SNAP funding would lapse because of the #shutdown & that the #OMB would use contingency reserves to pay for benefits past Oct. That memo, however, was scrubbed from the agency’s website later in Oct, once the #Trump admin began arguing against tapping contingency funds to pay for benefits.
In the MSNBC interview, host Chris Jansing also explained that Mei was speaking as herself & a #union leader, not a USDA employee.

In the 4-min interview, Mei said she & her co-workers are “anxious because we’re hearing about the risk potentials & office closures that are looming over #USDA as this #shutdown kind of drags on.” She also explained that funding for key #FoodAssistance programs, including #SNAP — which feeds ~42M Americans monthly — would probably be available in October, but that “things might get a little dicey if this drags on into November.”
[gee such a fireable offense!]
The next day, #USDA informed Mei that the process to remove her from her position had begun. In correspondence reviewed by WaPo, an official in the USDA human resources dept told Mei that she will be let go 30 days after the #shutdown ends. The agency accused Mei of discussing USDA programs & funding “without prior approval.”

The employee, Ellen Mei, a program specialist at the #Food & #Nutrition Service who is furloughed, was interviewed on MSNBC on Oct 2, during the early days of the #shutdown, to talk about how the impasse in Washington would impact her team, as well as the work they do. Mei is also president of the National Treasury Employees #Union’s Chapter 255, which represents employees at #USDA’s Food & Nutrition Service in the Northeast.
