so, while there were other things that influenced my decision to resign from #calyx, in the end, the biggest were the on-going outrageous behavior coming out of the engineering department, and a failure of leadership to do anything meaningful about it. although i deeply respect the #calyxos team and the many great folks at the institute, unfortunately, until/unless something is done, i cannot support calyx, and i cannot recommend donating to them right now. none of this even delves into the #calyx engineering director's endless gaslighting, predictable derailing of discussions and decision-making, hoarding of access and information, attempts to delay / sabotage the revival of #calyxos, and apparent eagerness to direct $10,000's of member donations toward goods and services from the warmongering likes of AWS and thales. those would warrant threads of their own. (8/9)
some may think, "i don't mind if #calyx moves my name, email, address, etc to vultr. it's not like it's AWS" - or "this is why i never share any personal info that i can't afford to be leaked anyway". but in my mind, given that calyx has hosted its own services for years - VPN, tor exit nodes, #calyxos release server, etc - i think people have come to expect this and to hold them to a higher standard for data handling and transparency. it's your data. shouldn't you know who has it? What with my Fairphone 4 just receiving it's last #CalyxOS update for a while and when they do start again it has to be a full reinstall, So I'm wondering has any UK folk successfully got UK banking apps running in #Waydroid using a #PostMarketOS device ?? If so which apps work ??
I'm absolutely not bothered about phone calls just data and I'm considering a Fairphone 5 as most things apart from audio seem to work already. I do have a OnePlus 6T too but haven't used it for a year or two.
Boosts appreciated and thank you ❤️

There is a lot of disagreement about what qualifies as a "burner phone," but learning to put together a device that protects your most sensitive data from surveillance and seizure by govts and law enforcement is good, actually, so here is a guide from ACLU's Rebecca Williams:
This week in #FDroid (TWIF) is live but late to toot:
* Slow updates? There's a reason, or 2️⃣
* Don't be surveilled, engage in our research 🔭
* Using #Calyx#CalyxOS? Read now! 💔
* #DeltaChat hits v2, #ArcaneChat soon™
* #NeoStore finally upgrades to Index-V2
* #NewPipe in your 🚗 ? Maybe...
* #Wesnoth is back 🐴 ⚔️

I'm debating on whether to move to GrapheneOS or, since their social media team attacked and "banned" me, and accused me of being some kind of spy because I mentioned CalyxOS in a comment, I may just use regular #Android and lock it down the best I can.

I’m running CalyxOS on my old Fairphone4, not because it’s a bad choice, but precisely to observe how incredibly behind this OS is on security updates.
My primary device today is a Pixel 9a running GrapheneOS, not this outdated, insecure, and privacy-compromised Fairphone 4.
This Fairphone never became my daily driver once I realized just how far behind it is on security and privacy. I used it from October 2022 until I switched to my Pixel 6a running GrapheneOS in early May 2023, and only recently upgraded to the 9a (see links below):

Now, heading into August 2025, and the Fairphone is on Android 15 with vendor and firmware updates on CalyxOS stuck at versions from March 5 for vendor, and June 1 Platform and June 5 for kenel updates, months behind in a critical security landscape. 😐

If you think GrapheneOS isn’t private and secure, check out this comparison chart covering GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, IodéOS, /e/os, LineageOS, and Stock Android.
https://eylenburg.github.io/android_comparison.htm
It shows how much more GrapheneOS focuses on security and privacy compared to the others!
Edit: GrapheneOS only supports Pixel devices because they meet the project’s security requirements, offering hardware features like memory tagging (MTE), StrongBox keystore, hardware key attestation, pKVM, hardened malloc, and more: https://grapheneos.org/faq#future-devices

Further news from the #CalyxOS team regarding Android 16.
It seems that their security updates will be delayed due to a shifting emphasis on re-tooling for the new changes in how Android is shared (or not) with the FOSS community.
This... this is bad. :(

For the first time I flashed a phone with #CalyxOS from another CalyxOS phone using @calyxos 's web installer ( https://install.calyxos.org/ ). No additional laptop was necessary. Quite a step from the first times we flashed phones at the @fsfe in 2012. Thanks @grote for the hint to try that out!
