I'm the child of German immigrants to Canada. German was my first language and I was kid-levels of bilingual in my early years but I mostly lost it when I started going to school.
So the third and last options are both true for me.
(Also, I get stupidly proud of myself when I understand a German joke.)
@finn You could replace "Mastodon" with #Vienna in the above post (that is speaking as an immigrant in Vienna where I've never actually learned German beyond shopping and food ordering level basics because a) academic in international work settings plus b) everyone here switches to English instantly and c) integration isn't much encouraged by a country that visibly hates immigrants & will never let me get citizenship on reasonable terms anyway).
