I heard a crazy fact (not checked but this person seemed credible) from an energy/oil expert on a podcast today. He said that humans have never used less of any energy source over time. Meaning, we use as much wood today as we did when we heated everything with wood and used it to build everything.
So our energy demand has just grown and grown, and as we develop new sources we continue to use the old sources just as much.

There are many countries with full-on exploitative practices that fit the definition of slavery.
In the developed world, skilled-worker visa schemes (H-1B in the US, but most industrialised nations have one like it) can be used to restrict the ability of certain people to move from one job to another.
😬 This has turned out to be a very un-fun question to think about.
