The "slowdown" is a sham, and a way to impose anti-competitive regulations and artificially inflate the value of the AI corps.

Slowing down means little here. The development isn't my worry, it's the frenzied construction and disregard for the quality of life of people left in the wake of this "progress".
There is so much money being blown on something that has an negative impact on human quality of life.
I want everyone to imagine taking all this effort, and using it on transit, batteries, and renewables.

@evan yes but in investments, valuation and military/law-enforcement use rather than the plea for governments to kick away the ladder from the incumbents
@evan there are a bunch of other uses which are criminal, unethical, inefficient but yes genAI is taking up too much space/air/water/energy rn

Yes, but not because of the AI panic currently so popular in the media.
AI needs to slow down because of the loss of people's jobs, replaced by enshittified, inadequate chatbots. And because of the extreme environmental damage caused by data centres: the destruction of farmland; the excessive water usage; complaints of constant noise and vibration; the increased costs of electricity for consumers; the greenhouse gas emissions when the data centres have on-site generators.

@evan yes but that's not enough. Reform fair use doctrine, make AI companies pay for externalities and empower local communities to make informed decisions on DC projects, have well thought out regulations for misinformation, responsibility for AI hacks, etc
In short the whole incarnation should not have existed and we need to reckon with that first.
