Honestly, peertube seems like a right pain to self host, and videos take up a decent amount of space. I've been tempted to self host some videos, but I think I'd rather go down the route of writing a little bash script to generated done video pages with an RSS feed. Seems easier to me.

@aral the hacking and the leak are expected. The story should be why the media is not covering this as it deserves. This is the largest proof that age or ID verification laws put everyone at risk. If it was covered properly there will be a proper backlash to these laws similar to what is happening with the flock cameras.

And it looks like the last refuge the government will leave for unrestricted communication will be the underground self-hosted servers. Great to see you're doing your part to help with the transition, but it sure hurts to see so few people able to move to, or even aware of, the alternatives.
I don't use many services that seem like they will require age verification but the ones that do can just fuck off and I will have to do without or get an alternative.
So far only my Sony Playstation account has asked for age verification to continue using in game chat but strangely I can still chat on Fortnite on my PS4 without issue. I don't have a card associated with my account so they can't even use that as a proxy.
@aral I’ve had my Vimeo account suspended due to the *file name* of the video I uploaded and had to reach out to customer service twice to resume my *paid service*
@aral It is just so utterly bonkers stupid that any service is trying to force paying customers, who are paying with a payment card you can't get without being of reasonable age, to prove their age.
it's not stupid, it's evil. it's the same reason facebook et al are pushing for laws requiring age verification in operating systems. the long-range plan is to completely abandon the concept of content moderation, and make it your problem for having passed the age check.
