I just encountered An Escapologist’s Manifesto and its eleven tenets. One struck me in particular, and I should apply it immediately: “Practise the philosophy of the public library.”

It is hard to say exactly what that entails as a programme for life. But, as a trained philosopher, I could begin by weakening my professional ethos enough to recognise that everyone engages in philosophy—and that everyone, quite simply, has a right to books.
