“Show us the numbers”
Nice work from the abc story lab here. Data from ABS. Trends over time. Ack of changing definitions.
Now I wonder - how many Australians stop calling Australia home?
Who leaves and never returns? And relinquishes citizenship?
Is that data somewhere handy?

@kattekrab I know Ireland tracks both emigration (leaving) and immigration (arriving), and emigration has slowed slightly this past year as economic conditions improved. I expect it is also trackable for Australia. Ireland uses arrivals and departures collected by their Central Statistics Office, we could probably use ABS and Home Affairs published data.
George Megalogenis’ new book is a good example of using data as the foundation for a narrative about what migration means for national identity.
