I just rewatched TRON and realized it's really about the battle between LISP machines and MULTICS. Memory should be free for programs to roam about in, not controlled by a Master Control Program (protected mode kernel).

So, Windows 98SE and MacOS 9 were the peak of computing before our programs got enslaved by the NT kernel and XNU.
Linux always sucked, of course.
Likewise, all programs should be able to talk on the network. You can literally see all the sockets opening after TRON shuts down the MCP.
