A week ago I was trying to reassure a trans friend who was very nervous about asking them to change their pronouns & name at a LARP we're going to for the first time together.
I said to them "I'm pretty sure at least one of the refs is trans" & since I said it it has been floating around my brain as a "I think I really fucked up at allyship" thing.
I had other ways to reassure them but not directly about the people they were about to interact with.

1. So folks can choose if they have capacity to educate me.
2. So I'm not exposing people to possible transphobia.

I think a lot of people conflate genuine mistakes with being an asshole. You might have made the former without being the latter, and the problem with asking people to "educate" you is that opinions are like assholes, in that everyone has one.
@neonbubble that's fair but I'd like to know if it was a not ok thing to do so I can know not to do it in future. Or if I'm overthinking it
But who has authority on the answer you're prepared to accept?
For example: I write detailed alt text on my photos. Some blind people have thanked me for it. Some blind people have said to keep it simpler. Who is right?
You can't please everyone.
