I've never heard of that "German" cast-on method, let alone tried it. It looks complicated. I've just always cast on the way I learned when I was 5 (which is quite different).
Maybe I should take a graduate course in knitting.

@buchfee2 Me too (but I was nine years old)! The idea of this one is to give you a stretchy beginning to a sock or a cuff. I have only knitted one pair of socks and I hated every minute of it, so I'm going to do another pair so I get over myself.
