I teach at Codebar, my mum was a civil engineer, I've heard a lot about sexism in both professions, it can be quite depressing
@onepict I thought from the topic headings that this would be a list of ideas men had. I am so glad this was put together by women for men. Good stuff.
I was raised to treat women as heroes. My great aunt Dr. Margaret Merrell got her advanced degrees in mathematics and biostatistics in the 1920s and '30s at a time when that was rare for women. My list of heroes is long and rich and starts with her.
@spellucci I think it's important for everyone to work together on this.
We can see when we look around at the state of the web and how our technology operates that the lack of diversity reflects on the design of our projects, both software and hardware infrastructure.
I'd not come across that document before, I wish I had.
@onepict I initially thought you were poking fun at the linked doc, so I had an odd experience reading it and saying "hey! This doesn't really feel goofy paternalistic and outdated, wait a sec is it actually written by women?"
The meta point - how is this from nearly a quarter century ago and progress feels just barely incremental. When this came out I was too young to be working in the industry, and last year I got a call from a female colleague before a meeting saying "I have some ideas and I know X is going to try to kick them out, can you have my back?". Like, it's nice to be One Of The Good Ones ™️ but it's wrong that that should be a thing.
(also, the thing about not calling people Nazis because it's overblown seems... quaint)

Actual thing which I try to do: don't repeat ideas, say someone's name and ask them to repeat/expand. I tend to understand and digest things by rephrasing, so I have to remember to dial that back and take a breath.
@djm62 Yeah. Although even a few years ago, I'd seen folks go on about "feminazis" because they'd been called out.
It does take vigilance. When you have centuries of society dictating how it thinks folk should act, it's no surprise when a little progress is made, that there's an urge to roll it back.
We also didn't factor in how much we've been indoctrinated into libertarianism. So there's a lot of unlearning for us to do. Especially when we're privileged and white.
@onepict I wonder who came up with the name "LinuxChix". Does not sound welcoming.

@onepict i struggle ab bit with what this "beyond" refers to. They write they ceased operation in 2025. when you mean the archived courses: Is there something to look at in particular?
@adorfer Well you could go through the document. Look at the studies suggested in the original document.
But I don't see what's so unwelcoming about chix. It's a US English terms that a group of very technical women coined for themselves.
I honestly can't tell if you're trolling or if it's genuine.
