yesterday’s #rec didn’t get me any answers on that combo so I’ll open it up to a few other options I’ve been considering…

so – is anyone +running #Linux* happily [1] on a 14” [2] laptop with a GPU from #MSI, #ASUS #ROG or #TUF, (or others)?

requirements (somewhat flexible:

– light, pref. ~1.5kg +/-
– 14” max. unless it’s super-light with good battery (so a thin 1.5kg 15.6” or even 17” with 12 hour battery (🦄) would be fine 🤪)
– good battery life, where “good” is >4 hours but longer life is better
– decent GPU, but it doesn’t have to be bleeding edge (a 40xx or even 30xx or equivalent would be fine)

bonus points for:

– switching between onboard & discrete GPU works acceptably
– sleep & suspend work (consistently)

@itgrrl how good does the GPU need to be? the built-in Radeon 8060S/8065S in the Ryzen AI MAX+ PRO 395/495 doesn't suck - can do 1080p gaming quite handily (around the same as a mobile RTX 3080/5070) and AMD driver support on Linux is first class thanks to Valve/Steam

@decryption gaming isn’t my primary use for GPU but it’s not not a use 🙃

a 40xx or even 30xx or equivalent would be fine, but newer discrete GPUs are more likely to have GDDR6 & don’t have to share system memory (and I assume have a separate bus for GPU mem bandwidth) so discrete GPU is my preference if possible. I know I’m pushing up against the laws of physics, and the “usual” way to “solve” that is to throw a truckload of 💰💰💰 at the problem, but I can’t bring myself to drop a bananapants amount of money on a laptop (most of my laptops were secondhand when I got them, apart from my chonky Linux beast)

thx for the suggestion 💕 I have been considering laptops with higher-spec integrated graphics & looking at benchmark comparisons, so it’s on my radar(ish)

my mental benchmark is “can I get something in a light 14” laptop that outperforms my chonky Linux laptop (2017 System76 Oryx Pro 3 that has 32GB DDR4, a 1070, 2x 500GB M.2 SATA SSDs & a 2TB 2.5” HDD)”?^ 🤔

that’s my current workhorse when I need some grunt, but it’s heavy enough that I use it less often than my old MacBook Pro 13” (so, no GPU) that’s frequently underpowered but much more pleasant to use on the couch & can actually last more than 1.5 hours on battery when I’m using it out of the house / office 💁‍♀️

I’m in the process of ditching macOS as much as I can on my personal machines (I’ve long since ditched Windows), but I’ll likely keep a smallish macOS partition on the old MacBook Pro for syncing stuff to & backing up my iPhone until I find some solid, non-clunky solutions to that problem as well (no, I’m not moving to Android for my primary phone – I have a spare Android phone that I used to use for work but… eugh 😜)

^ and doesn’t cost $5k+ 🙅‍♀️

@itgrrl the good thing about the Ryzen AI Max is that it uses an 8000MHz DDR5 256-bit bus, so it's pretty bloody quick for non-GPU stuff and still keeps up with GDDR6 for GPU stuff - imho it's a good compromise if you need to keep things under 1.5kg-1.6kg - downside is that they're really expensive because that fat memory bus paired with 64-128GB of RAM also makes them good for local LLM use, so they're in demand and often out of stock and never on sale

it looks like it has LPDDR5X (soldered) so I’d have to find a 64GB model & that’s its max. SSD is replaceable, but their service manual only references up to 1TB – I could probably drop a 2-4TB SSD in but ¯⧹(ツ)⧸¯

plus everything with SDRAM in it is bananapants 💰💰💰 for the foreseeable future (thanks “AI” (🙄), I hate it) so RAM or SSD upgrades are 😩
