@evan At least a lot less so now that AI has eaten so much of open source. I don't want to volunteer to create training data for automated scabs.

@evan I quit working in tech, not hacking on tech. Now I only work on projects that actually have real value to people, which is quite the relief after a career in B2B software.
Now I help run a co-op grocery store and am trying very hard to stay out of IT's lane, as difficult as that is for me.
@evan I went on a sabbatical nearly a year ago and still occasionally do tech stuff for fun, but have found that circular saws and wire strippers are much more enjoyable. I'll probably return to tech someday, but in the meantime I've got this image on hot standby.
@evan it stopped being my job and I kept doing it, so yeah
@evan yeah my job became meetings and presentations and spreadsheets and no actual computer-touching. Something something Peter Principle. So I do my own tech on my own time.

Don't you keep a little sumthin sumthin on the side to play with every once in a while? Maybe on a hackday or a no-meetings Friday or so?
I suppose I'm not a tech professional since I haven't graduated college yet and don't work yet.

@evan I was retired for 5 years and didn’t miss it. Now I’m back, and AI like what AIm doing but it’s sure different now 🤖 😆
@evan other way around. If I wasn't doing it for a job I'd have the energy for my own projects, which I otherwise do not.
@evan Yes, but I can't afford the kind of hardware I work on (I'm in sensor development) so I wouldn't be "working" so much as "playing with toys" at unless I'm a millionaire in this alternate universe.

@evan Yes. I've been tinkering with computers and electronics my entire life. If I didn't have to worry about money, then my current job (programming robots) is what I would be doing anyway. (Although, I'd probably be a bit lazier about it...)

@evan It is because i am not handy w/anything hardware computer or not; i have failed at bicycle repair, household maintenance, assembling ikea furniture etc. Most computer people I know can do one or more of these things without problems. I can't; even with YouTube videos, books & manuals. If it doesn't have a keyboard I can't cope 😄 Which I think is both ROFL & sad because you know I would like more life skills 😄 I can cook 25 dishes, bicycle and cross country ski but that's about it :-)
