I don't remember the head of AOL publishing any weird manifestos about how democracy is incompatible with freedom.
I don't remember the head of CompuServe performing any weird salutes at any government functions.
I don't remember the Internet being meant to replace all humans.
@argv_minus_one increased ability for tech companies to control and manipulate people?
A decrease in the ability for people to do things without the assistance of technology?
Why is it a requirement that people be able to do things without the assistance of technology?
It seems to me that the real problem is when there is something wrong with the technology in question, like it being controlled by an elite few, leading to significantly worse results, being impossible to use without causing a lot of environmental damage, or something like that.
Did the Internet have any of those problems?
@argv_minus_one I think it's important to maintain mental abilities in case you are ever without technology
Needing to look up information in a book, needing to navigate somewhere with a paper map or no map, needing to do calculations in your head etc.
I'm not saying that technology is bad, just that it's existence has an impact on people that isn't always good
And the best way to deal with technology is to be cognisant of that
There was a time when written language was considered a source of de-skilling and intellectual decay.
It's a lot harder to memorize oral traditions than to simply look something up in a book, after all.
But writing things in books has enabled us to do many things we were completely incapable of in the times of oral tradition. So it's kind of a wash.
LLMs don't appear to be such an even trade-off.
