From scratch.

Making custom models has turned 3D-printing from a family novelty into a full-blown craft and life-improving hobby for me.

I started in TinkerCAD, which can get you VERY far, VERY quickly. Now I make most models in Onshape, since I've built up the skills to be pretty fast with it, too.

I sometimes print stuff I find on Makerworld, but usually the problems I'm trying to solve are too specialized.

@marcoarment hey, heard your 3d clip printing story on @atpfm. great use, everyday stuff, but how do you create the file to print? was it from scratch or did you find it to downlad somewhere?

@marcoarment Great to hear that. I also love onshape (free) for my 3D printing models. I used Fusion360 once or twice, but only if I really need some special forms that onshape wouldn‘t do.

@marcoarment Since you enjoy LLMs writing code for you, they are also good at producing OpenSCAD code for things to 3d-print. Ever tried that?

@marcoarment @martimw do you use the free onshape version? It’s kind of shocking that the first level of paid support is $1000/year. I want to build some stuff, in a while it’s not necessarily “secret”, I don’t want it freely available on a public forum, which I believe all free onsnape models are right?

@joelion @martimw Yeah, I use the free version. Anyone could go find my window clips. I don't really care.

I do wish there was a lower price tier that didn't have any support or enterprise features and was JUST private. But I get it.
