@henstridge Trump's overall motive for cozying up to Putin is trade. He sees a dictator whom no one wants to trade with and therefore an opportunity to make a deal.

I do not believe Trump's "overall motive" is trade with Russia. Sure, oil is a factor but not the main one.
Rather his stuck-in-the-1970s brain still sees Russia as a great superpower and he wants to divide up the world with Russia and China. A modern day Yalta.
The man is a fantasist, brain rotted by decades of "positive thinking".
He must bolster Putin (and harm allies) to make his fantasy true.
