“I know X and Elon Musk and what he stands for are bad, but a lot of people are still on X, so I think it’s okay if I go back.”
This is not a nuanced take. It’s not a thoughtful one, either. It is just an *excuse.* All these people writing long blog posts just to say, “I’m giving myself permission to do something I know is bad because other things out there are worse.”
Go back to X if you want. But after all this time, let’s be honest, it’s not become better. It’s just become worse.
“The world is messy and sometimes you just gotta go along with the fascism, you know?”
“We all make bad choices. So what’s another one?”
These aren’t good arguments, people!!
@louie I haven’t seen anybody, not one person, make that argument. (Edited: Well, except for the MacStories folks. But that’s not what other people are saying.)
@brentsimmons Brent, I love and respect you, and I don’t particularly want get into it with you. I know you didn’t say that this “tech choice” was permissible, but you did lay out a long list of choices you allow in your own life that you think about before criticizing others who make this choice. And I think, when you said that, there’s an implication that you do not want to criticize *this* because you feel that you also do some bad things, therefore, this one gets some sort of pass.
@louie (That wasn’t a long list of choices I allow in my own life! I’m sickened to think it may have come across that way. I do almost none of those things.)
@brentsimmons but when you also refer to it as a “tech choice,” you took away the political nature of making this choice. When I talk with people less privileged than myself, I can see how decisions I could make impact them in ways they do not impact me. What would going back to X signal to them, about me and what I’m okay with? It’s not just a tech choice. And saying so only benefits people who want to make that choice. It is a defense of them making it. Not criticism.
