Post on bluesky from @rossthesedays.bsky.social:
I sure I've told this story before, but many moons ago | asked
@rmi.bsky.social for advice on setting up Internet access for rangatahi
that would prevent digital harm and his advice was "there's no firewall
that works better than creating a community that sets expectations of
behaviour"
I think about that a lot. There's a constant Discourse churn on the next
app or the next ban that will Fix Things, when we're actually talking
about the outsourcing of personal, social and community responsibility
for behaviour and safety.
This is how this shows up in our whanau. Jr Cans loves talking to his
pals on FB messenger while playing Minecraft. It matters to him. He
knows that we trust him, and if there's a problem we'll help him. There's
an expectation of behaviour and responsibility, with support.

I've got a below ten year old who has online access and by having
good trust, open conversations and ensuring he knows he can talk to
us if he sees something thats scary, wrong or makes him feel bad
has meant he is safer online.
