Post on bluesky from @rossthesedays.bsky.social: I sure I've told this story before, but many moons ago | asked @rmi.bsky.social for advice on setting up Internet access for rangatahi that would prevent digital harm and his advice was "there's no firewall that works better than creating a community that sets expectations of behaviour" I think about that a lot. There's a constant Discourse churn on the next app or the next ban that will Fix Things, when we're actually talking about the outsourcing of personal, social and community responsibility for behaviour and safety. This is how this shows up in our whanau. Jr Cans loves talking to his pals on FB messenger while playing Minecraft. It matters to him. He knows that we trust him, and if there's a problem we'll help him. There's an expectation of behaviour and responsibility, with support. bluesky post from Ross @rossthesedays.bsky.social - 18h We also have lots of chats with him about how his behaviour (unintentional or otherwise) can make other people feel bad, e.g why his pal's joke about boobs might make a girl at his table feel bad and why we need to think about these things. It's not HARD but it does require actual parenting. A social media ban won't make my son or any kid safer. Decent sex and relationship education will. Addressing systemic inequity will. Consequences for hate speech and violence wil. Social media platform content regulation (and taxing the bastards) will.
