Dang it, saw a post about hand lettering course and remembered that is also one of the things I am trying to learn! Typography/lettering, printmaking, and the band saw, along with making computers do weird stuff are the key interests, and everything builds off of those. It requires a lot of pivoting. Oh yeah throw playing guitar badly and listening to live music in there. If I could figure out a way to make all of those into a career, that would be ideal.

@davebauerart I am not suggesting this as a path at all, but I admit I get a little jealous (and regretful of past choices) watching a few youtubers whose work I enjoy seemingly make a living at pursuing their solar system of interests. I am also happy for them to the extent that they seem to be enjoying themselves. (I am sure there is plenty of hard work involved.)
@cstanhope Oh yeah I can also see several paths where I made different choices 25 years ago 😊 I even had a whole plan to do web consulting remotely from a print shop, but the world went in a very different direction.
@cstanhope Oh I definitely thought about it. I don't think I have it in me. You can find the 19 or so videos I made back around 2017-2020. I think the secret to a many successful YouTube creators is 1) no kids or 2) a spouse who can pay the bills and has health insurance. Even then, it requires a dedication to making the videos. A few of my friends are out there making it work!
@cstanhope That said, I have found a pretty stable career for my specific brand of problem-solving creativity, but it's much more desk work, than artsy! Still beats web programming or a corporate job!
@davebauerart I've managed to stay employed for a long while. I, unfortunately, wouldn't call it a career in the sense that I'm not sure I've built on it in any meaningful way. And I'm honestly not sure how much longer I can do it.
But yeah, having a second source of income and health insurance sure would've been handy many times. In fact, it would still be handy. 😆 I notice several of the youtubers I follow also live in countries that have universal health care. :/
