Should I keep my email list for my newsletter/articles, or toss it and keep my RSS feed only?

This is because of yesterday…

Newsletter SMTP provider: you’re over your limit.

Me: no way.

Provider: way.

Me: whoa. Hundreds of subscribers with fake emails bouncing away.

I spent hours building/testing my subscription form to deter bots without compromising accessibility. It has worked perfectly.

What I didn’t know is that my self-hosted Listmonk server has their built-in subscription form live by default. And the spammers found it.

😭

I immediately disabled it and cleaned up my list, but now I’m reconsidering the value of email for Mark Writes. RSS is far superior, but lots of folks don’t know what it is or how to use it.

@markwyner I added a "deliver via RSS" as an option, just to see if anyone would actually use it (via buttondown). It has slowly accumulated a number of folks, but I honestly don't know what to do when i hit the limit with my provider because i don't want to pay to deliver to people when i have no monetization ha

@jimniels oh, wow. I didn’t know about that @buttondown feature. That’s rad. I’m gonna have to check that out.

And, yeah, I don’t charge for my writing or my products, so it feels painful to pay for email distribution. Even though I respect that some people build things and need a monetary return for their time.

But I also hope folks read what I write, and I have a feeling lots of folks don’t use RSS. Even though…it’s the best!
