Doing it doesn't make someone trustworthy but if someone doesn't immediately collapse into ritualized babytalk when arriving home to their pets then they definitely are not to be trusted.
i adopt the value system of my cat when choosing what to be proud of her for and after visiting a number of other cats i am so proud of her for being so fast and ferocious. she is like 3x as fast as the other cats.
some cats are big ragdoll furballs and that's great for them, they have more friends and live easier lives, but she has chosen the life of the warrior and it shows.
i picked up a cat last week and it just melted into my arms and remained docile and essentially inactive, but still cat shaped. i picked up a cat yesterday and it released all the tension in its muscles. i picked up my cat and she remained rigid and buff and lept expertly out of my arms without a scratch and wall-jumped up to her perch and grabbed some of my hair in her claw to show her dominance. built different.
@jonny My old cat would lean over my shoulder, and use the added height to swipe (claws out) at anyone I walked past he didn't approve of - which was basically anyone that wasn't me, my mom, or her partner.
@jonny This is the same cat that managed to take down a family member who was >6ft(~1.8m) tall, and >350lbs(~159kg) - by hiding under a chair and attacking his leg as he walked by, to make him trip and face-plant.
I miss him (the cat, the family member is still around), 10/10, absolutely recommend anyone get a cat who will fight a creature 10x their size (and win) for you.
@miss_rodent their commitment to principled warfare is a defining feature of their species culture
@jonny Seems to be, though I think it applies to most of the felidae, not just domestic cats.
@miss_rodent warlike clade for sure
@jonny we always had the melting kind of cats. Love it when they do that and you start wondering if they actually have bones.
@jonny I once went back to a guy's place on a date and his roommate's two cats immediately climbed into my lap when I sat down. "Wow, they never do that with new people", he said. ;3
