I'm very much pro free software, but I integrate that stance within a broader advocacy of socialism.
I've come to realize that the corporate control of technology is incompatible with foss, and that the democratic control of technology by the people actually necessitates foss
@jackielovescompchem32 i want so much more from it! i think free software seeks to appease too much, and fails to interrogate how software enforces structures of power relations. this ranges from how the software is released, how the project incorporates outside contributions, how it manipulates inputs and the filesystem, and what sort of permissions it needs. it also very definitely covers the architecture of the software and how it considers interactions with other software. and finally it just doesn't at all interrogate how software can be free and still be very extremely evil.
@jackielovescompchem32 software as a product of human labor is the focal point of how i've tried to unify these--labor and the ability of workers to influence how their work is used. it's only one angle but it at least allows us to undermine "freedom 0" which is essentially abdicating that power we have as software workers

@lykso i'm mostly pissed off about stallman having the line about the NSA and snowden in his email signature for a decade+ and then seeing the fsf blatantly used to push broken crypto and propaganda about iran. you're absolutely right that there was no defense built in against hostile takeover by the security state
i am in fact very sad that stallman is incapable of understanding anything that's happening anymore because regardless of who it happens to taking advantage of or manipulating someone who can't resist for health reasons is always an evil thing to do.
but it's a basic requirement (that i learned from high school extracurriculars) that any organization with exactly one leader, who can't coach others or define a coherent set of beliefs for others to follow, will necessarily crumble.
this should be a great case study of how thoroughly opposition can be turned into controlled opposition if its belief system is incoherent and fails to incorporate analysis of power
