I am trying to use the public computer at the state library and they’ve disabled Alt+Tab and Windows+Tab??? I thought it was a broken keyboard but I went to a different computer and same thing. This is driving me insane.
@decryption Haven't these browsers taken it upon themselves to tunnel your DNS lookups out to their HQ via DOH or similar? That may explain the initial slow-start.
Most browsers also DNS cache above and beyond what your DNS infrastructure might do.
Nothing like browser being very bad net citizens if it serves their own interests.
It's also possible that the library has a DNS content filter that's slow and again subsequent lookups are cached by the browser.
@markd the browsers do - but it’s disabled in the chrome and Firefox settings so they use the library DNS. Content filter very likely.
@decryption Yes. But you can always execute random software from the Task Manager, Ctrl-Alt-Del->Task Mgr->Run... ;-)
@otte_homan they’re smart - all those are blocked
@decryption it's a case of BYO laptop so you don't go insane re: keys, installed weirdness etc etc.
Also when visiting a new URL in chrome or Firefox, the initial DNS lookup takes a few seconds. Subsequent ones are instant. What the fuck are they doing to make this happen.
@decryption
I know that one! Two DNS servers configured, the first one times out.
I've seen that at a place that messed up the config in a windows network and the domain controller was queried fine for local names but didn't respond with anything for global.
@decryption all computers cache DNS lookups to speed things up.
@prefec2 yes but that’s not what I’m complaining about - I’m complaining about the initial lookup takes 3-5 seconds, for every domain.
@decryption ok. That's weird. I had similar behavior via mobile connections when I exceeded my traffic volume and the telco reduces bandwidth. So maybe a bandwidth problem. I guess there is no traceroute or trace path on the library computers installed.
@decryption ... built-in DNS caching thingy?
@decryption Probably booting a VM to MITM your session and make sure you don't do anything shady.
@layoutSubviews maybe! The PC itself is also very slow
