@troed Oh hey, I coded NNs in 1990-91, for a research job at Duke U. 
🤓 I even wrote the core loops for them in ASM86 (measurably faster than compiled C code).
I desperately need to catch up and understand how the current generation differs from and overlaps with those methods...
@woozle There are a few different things of course, but I think "grokking" is the main discovery from how we trained NNs then. This is a really good video - we didn't understand it ourselves (the discovery happened by accident) until recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8GOeCFFby4

Maybe I need to sign all my posts with "Well you know I both wrote neural networks in the beginning of the 90s _and_ studied neuropsychology in the beginning of the 10s and I did all that BEFORE LLMs became cool so you'll actually need some real arguments if you want to claim I don't know what I'm talking about"?
